The Story Behind the Shutters

If you think of Mint Juleps and Southern drawls when you hear the word “plantation”, you’re not wrong. Its Southern living we have to thank for Plantation Shutters. The subtropical climate of the southern United States with its heat and humidity created the need for window coverings that would allow for light filtration and air flow.

Despite the fact that Scarlett O’Hara had a dress made from drapes in Gone With The Wind, those heavy fabric window coverings fell out of favor. Thus, shutters became the method used to control light and ventilation. They were painted white to reflect the sun’s rays. Today, they can be found in nearly any color or stained in many species of wood.

Some shutters lore says that shutters were created in Ancient Greece and were originally made of marble, making shutters a sign of wealth or royalty. Other stories say that the Spaniards introduced shutters to the American South. However they came to be, we think they were an inspired idea.

What makes a shutter a Plantation Shutter? The wide slats are their hallmark. Traditional Shutters, predominantly used in the Eastern United States during Colonial times, have narrow slats. Our custom large window shutters can be built up to 40” wide and 100” tall in a single panel.  Using American hardwoods, they’re constructed with finger-jointed louvers, which allows for them to be tilted to the desired position – and stay that way.

Louvers come in 2 1/2”, 3 1/2”, and 4 1/2” widths. There’s a special advantage to using 4 1/2″ widths – there’s 4″ between the louvers instead of 2 or 3 inches. This wider space allows for great views when you tilt open the louvers. You won’t have to swing open a shutter panel to enjoy those great views of the pool or the golf course.

Marco Makeover: Custom Shutters for a Downtown Condo

If we break it down to its most basic elements, a window is a hole in a wall with a glass covering. That’s just plain ugly, so custom shutters can come to the rescue to add security, temperature control and beauty to the window. Dressing a window with shutters is our preferred way to make an attractive statement!

But, what if your wall is over 100 years old and is a non-standard shape and size? The side windows in this Old Market condominium space are curved on the left and right. Standard shutters wouldn’t do.

Marco was up to the task for this challenge because we make all of our shutters in our own factory. We began by making templates to custom-fit the windows. Then, we brought the templates back to the shop and fabricated the shutters. On the third trip, we took the shutters down to the Old Market condo and custom-fit them by sanding them on site. Our makeover for dressing a window with shutters was well on the way to completion.

Then, it was back to the shop, where we put on the final coats of finish. On the final trip we installed them for a perfect result!

Sidelight Shutters have made Roscoe’s job a little more difficult. His job is to guard the house. He takes his job seriously, especially since his owners are working from home. Roscoe wants them to know he’s on the job. And even when they’re on a conference call, Roscoe feels that his people absolutely should know there’s a squirrel across the street, three doors down.
